Spain is bursting with art and cultural sights, offering a diverse range of activities to those eager to explore the country. Here are 10 things we recommend you do or see in Spain:
1. Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid
This modern art museum consists of 20th century Spanish art, including that of Picasso. It is popular worldwide and highly recommended for any art enthusiasts.
2. Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, Galicia
Known for being a sculptural beauty, this Cathedral is the reputed burial place of St. James the Great, one of Jesus’ apostles. The building boasts a Romanesque structure combined with gothic and baroque styles, and it is really a wonderful sight.
3. Park Güell, Gràcia
This park is a one-of-a-kind attraction which brings in around 4 million visitors on a yearly basis. It is the work of Antonio Gaudí, who was highly influenced by natural shapes. The brightly-coloured tiling found throughout the park creates a magical atmosphere worth viewing at least once in your life.
4. Teatre-Museu Dalí, Catalonia
Salvador Dalí’s museum – who was buried here – displays the largest collection of his work, along with work from other artists that he collected and Dalí sculptures, among other things.
5. La Tomatina, Buñol
This is a festival consisting of throwing tomatoes at each other for entertainment purposes. It is a widely popular event, recognised not only in Spain but internationally. Since 1945, it has been held on the last Wednesday of August.
6. Alcázar of Seville, Seville
The Alcázar of Seville is a royal palace built for the Christian king Peter of Castile. The upper levels of the palace are still used by the royal family as their official residence in Seville, making this the oldest royal palace that is still in use in Europe. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
7. Museu Picasso, Barcelona
This museum houses one of the most extensive collections of artworks by the 20th-century Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. This was the first museum dedicated to Picasso’s work, and the only one to ever open while he was alive. You will find some of his most-known works, such as The First Communion (1896) and Science and Charity (1897).
8. Kelipe, Málaga
Arguably one of the best flamenco clubs, Kelipe is a must-try for visitors. Besides the obviously astounding talent, the environment feels warm and intimate, differing from other flamenco clubs.
9. Real Monastero de Santa María de Guadalupe, Guadalupe
This Roman Catholic monastic establishment was one of the most important monasteries in Spain for more than 4 centuries. In 1993, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
10. Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid
Now a museum and gallery, this art school was established by Fernando VI in 1752. Picasso and Dalí both studied here, allowing it to gain recognition. There are now more than 1,500 paintings and almost 600 sculptures, with work including that of Van Dyck, Rubens, Raphael and Titian.
